Headlines: SA could lose skills to other African countries

Business Live - South Africa stands to lose scarce skilled resources to other African countries as massive foreign direct investment projects get underway on the African continent, according to Landelahni Recruitment Group.
This is because many countries are more attractive than SA in terms of their regulatory environment.
"South Africa needs to produce significantly more skilled resources as growing numbers begin working cross-border," according to Sandra Burmeister, CEO of Landelahni.

Since 2003, investment in Africa has exceeded that of other emerging countries - Ernst & Young forecasts that new African fixed direct investment (FDI) projects will reach US$150 billion by 2015, creating 350,000 new jobs per annum.

The financial services group expects Africa's GDP growth to average 5% through to 2015, and notes that countries which offered the most FDI opportunities include SA, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana and Angola...Read More

Headlines: Investors see Africa as most attractive destination - EIU poll

Reuters - More than one in two institutional investors see Africa as the most attractive region to invest in the next decade, with one in three expecting to put at least 5 percent of their portfolios into the continent by 2016, a survey showed on Tuesday.

Some 158 institutions including pension funds, hedge funds and private banks polled by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) said Nigeria and Kenya are likely to bring the best investment returns within Africa over the next three years, followed by Zimbabwe, Egypt and Ghana.

Currently, almost half of respondents have either no exposure or less than a one percent allocation to Africa, where an emerging middle class and growing consumerism are seen offering the most attractive investment opportunities...Read More

Headlines: Development is less about infrastructure, more about institutions

The Globe and Mail - Let’s start by getting this out of the way: There is much about foreign aid that works.
We should put to rest the tired arguments about whether countries like Canada should give any aid at all. Those who say it is a black hole of spending neglect the fact that for millions of people, aid has literally saved their lives. In doing so, it has created more favourable conditions for global prosperity.

It is far from a conclusive answer to poverty, but aid can transform lives by creating the basic conditions required for a people to prosper: good health, access to education and responsible governance. From this fertile soil much can grow, and does.
Take Malawi, one of the least developed countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Life in this small, landlocked country has become appreciably better in recent years due to foreign aid...Read More
